    It depends on what you’ve got. But you can definitely improve your singing by hiring a good voice teacher. A good teacher can help you learn how to sing properly so you don’t ruin your voice, and how to use what you have in the best way.

    P.S. A lot of professional singers aren’t really that special, they are just produced and packaged well. Shania Twain, for example, doesn’t particularly impress me with her voice. But I hear that she is very entertaining when she performs. So performing well is more than just singing well.

    A lot of “pro” singers simply have style and can give a song character… something that’s much more important than how many octaves you can reach. Some of them are good enough to set the styles and redefine what people think of as “good”. {It does help to have a gaggle of marketeers on your side.}

    …Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Johnny Rotten, Morrisey, Peter Gabriel, Jon Anderson, Robert Smith, Bjork and God knows how many folk, punk, metal and country singers…

    …Compare their relative successes with Annie Haslam {though she did pretty well}, Maire Brennan, Lisa Gerrard {likewise, pretty well}, Debora Iyall, Diamanda Galas {Though she’s incredible, he’s not the most popular girl on the scene today}, etc, etc…
